Bukit Timah Railway Station

Bukit Timah Railway Station is a conserved heritage site along the Rail Corridor, offering a glimpse into Singapore’s former railway history. Restored buildings and surrounding green spaces provide visitors with a unique blend of heritage and nature.

The Bukit Timah Railway Station community node was opened on 1 July 2022. The community node comprises of the following:

  • Two conserved buildings - Bukit Timah Railway Station and Railway Staff Quarters

  • Two gardens - Kampung Garden, and Herb and Spice Garden

  • Yard shelter with a toilet block

  • An event lawn

Bukit Timah Railway Station

The conserved Bukit Timah Railway Station building was built in 1932 and is one of two extant railway stations in Singapore. Along with its key architectural and railway elements, the railway station has been sensitively and carefully restored and repurposed as a heritage gallery for visitors to learn about its history and that of the Rail Corridor.

In the building, you can see restored elements like track switching levers, ticketing booth, and a replica of a signals diagram in the Signal Room, which former Station Masters used to control rail traffic. Do note that entry to the Signal Room is not allowed, but you can observe its interior from the entrance. To the front of the building, you can find more restored features, such as station signs, token poles, and replicas of railway station wagons that once plied the tracks.

Railway Staff Quarters

The conserved Railway Staff Quarters, located beside the iconic Bukit Timah Railway Station, has been repurposed as a café, offering visitors a unique opportunity to enjoy refreshments within a heritage setting. Originally built to house railway staff during the operational days of the railway, the building has been carefully conserved, with key architectural features retained to preserve its historic character.

Visitors can explore the surrounding Bukit Timah Railway Station precinct and Rail Corridor before stopping by the café to rest and enjoy the atmosphere of this restored heritage building.

1932 Story Café

Housed within the conserved Railway Staff Quarters beside Bukit Timah Railway Station, 1932 Story Café offers food and beverages in a unique heritage setting. Inspired by the history of the former railway station, the café showcases railway memorabilia and vintage artefacts that reflect the rich heritage of the Rail Corridor.

  • Monday: 9.00am to 2.30pm

  • Tuesday: Closed

  • Wednesday to Sunday & Public Holidays: 9.00am to 7.30pm

Kampung Garden / Herb and Spice Garden

The Railway Staff Quarters features two new gardens – Kampung Garden, and Herb and Spice Garden.

Check out the ornamental shrubs and flowers iconic to Singapore’s 1960s landscape in the Kampung Garden. They include the Bunga Raya (Hibiscus rosa-sinensis), Peacock Flower (Caesalpinia pulcherrima), and the Arabian Jasmine (Jasminum sambac 'Arabian Nights'’).

The Herb and Spice Garden showcases plants like Siamese Ginger (Zingiber officinale), Laksa Leaf (Persicaria odorata) and Cili Padi (Capsicum frutescens) that were commonly used for homecooked dishes.

Yard shelter

A new sheltered Yard serves as a rest area and gathering point, with public restrooms that simulate rustic toilets found in the old days. The Yard also features an educational board that shares with visitors the history of the railway.

Upon exiting the MRT station, turn left and walk along Bukit Timah Road for 5 minutes. You will be greeted by a landscaped entrance point to lead you into the Rail Corridor.

Parking information:

There is no carpark at the Bukit Timah Railway Station community node. You are encouraged to visit via public transport.

Opening hours:

The Rail Corridor is open 24/7. However, as it is an important ecological corridor, the Rail Corridor is not lit at night to facilitate nocturnal wildlife movement. Lighting is only provided at certain access points, essential walking paths and benches leading to the public restrooms and Bukit Timah Railway Station building and Railway Staff Quarters.
